Barry Ellis was schooled at Marquette public schools and received a bachelors degree in accounting from Northern Michigan University in 1961. He held various office jobs while at school, which gave him practical experience for life's work. Barry began at "Our Own Bakery" in May of 1960 as a clerk in the Data Processing department on a part-time basis. After graduation from the university he became full-time, rising through the night position from Office Manager to General Manager in 1980. In 1992 he left his position at the bakery and held several sales jobs until his retirement in December of 1995.

He was active in church where he attended First Methodist Church. Beginning in 1966 he worked in various positions there, including Sunday School Teacher, lay leadership, Missions Board, Chairman and Treasurer, as well as various positions in the community. In November of 1976, Barry became a Christian by accepting Jesus Christ as master of his life. He and his wife, Marge, felt they should leave the First Methodist Church and in 1982 they joined Marquette Gospel Tabernacle.

One of their main reasons for coming to Marquette Gospel Tabernacle was the missions program [namely Richard and Esther Collingridge] which seemed to draw Barry and Marge and get them acquainted with the church in the early years. Since then they have been active in many church roles, which have included Sunday School teaching, board responsibilities, as well as being chairman. In 1989 Barry became Missions Treasurer. Barry was then elected as an Elder of Marquette Gospel Tabernacle in 1993.

Barry Ellis became a board member in 1994.
